Anthropology of Star Trek Fandom Survey -- The Results Are In!
Throughout 2010 I had set out to collect data on Star Trek fans in order to better understand this often misunderstood, misrepresented culture. The purpose behind creating this fairly comprehensive survey was to gather data for the forthcoming book, Anthropology of Star Trek. The book is a text that mirrors my original course of the same name, an introduction to cultural anthropology with a Star Trek theme. The book, like the course, contains a chapter on fandom. In addition to the papers contributed by both fans and professionals, the fandom chapter contains a brief ethnographic analysis of fandom based on the data provided by this survey. Questions included asking fans to rate their level of involvement in fandom, to what extent Trek influenced career or educational decisions or daily lives in general, how fans define the culture of fandom, the ways in which fans perceive of Trek, defining fandom ideology, asking fans why Trek, and about the need for Star Trek in the world today. Basic demographics were also collected. A total of 5,041 individuals participated. Many thanks go out to all who took part both in the survey and in getting the word out about this survey, and to those who have continued to assist me in working on the data.

Star Trek’s Nichelle Nichols To Appear At “Women Of Sci-Fi” Convention This Weekend, Jan 29-30
If you are near the Dallas Texas area this weekend (January 29 & 30, 2011) be sure to stop by the “Women Of Sci-Fi” convention that’s being held in Plano, a Dallas suburb. You will get the chance to see and hear a ton of great female actors from the sci-fi genre; including Star Trek’s own Nichelle Nichols (Uhura). If you aren’t in the area be sure to watch our site over the weekend because we’ll be there live blogging all the good stuff for you, so you won’t miss a thing.
This isn’t a Star Trek convention per se, but who could resist the amazing line up they have going. Chances are if you like Trek, then you dig other sci-fi shows too. Some of the other shows being represented at the con are; Battlestar Galactica, V, Firefly, Buck Rogers, Stargate, Stargate Universe, Smallville, and more.
Morena Baccarin, Tricia Helfer and Katee Sackhoff are among the actresses appearing at the upcoming Sci-Fi Expo celebrating “Women of Sci-Fi” in Plano, Texas. The two-day event will be Jan. 29-30 in the Plano Convention Center, 2000 E. Spring Creek Parkway.

Another Scifi / Star Trek con is heading to the Plano Center in Plano, TX. Called “Women of Sci-Fi” and presented by Scifi Expo the convention is set for the weekend of January 29/30th. Aptly named, the con will focus on Scifi actresses from all across the genre, including Star Trek's own Nichelle Nichols. If that isn't enough, our good friends Larry Nemecek & Daryl Frazetti will also be appearing / presenting at the con. No news yet on the presentation topics, but we'll let you know as soon as we get word from Larry and Daryl.
We're definitely looking forward to the show, Scifi Expo put on a fantastic con back in October with their Star Trek Fan days, which we covered extensively. If you're in the DFW area, be sure to swing by and if you can't make it, we'll be there with live coverage from the con

Star Trek For Homework? Heck Yeah!
What kid didn’t wish that just once their mom would say, “Now put that book down! Turn that TV on! And watch some Star Trek!” Ok, maybe it was just me, but come on, how cool would that have been? Now, if you take one of Professor Daryl Frazetti’s courses that may become a reality. Many of you may know Daryl from the documentaries “Trekkies” and “Trekkies 2.” More recently he’s using his knowledge of Star Trek and other science fiction in the Anthropology courses he teaches and a book he is currently writing. To help in the data collection for his upcoming book, “The Anthropology of Star Trek” he has created a short Star Trek Fandom survey that you can take now through the end of November.
Star Trek Fan Days, Plano, TX. - Post Convention Wrap-Up
We had a fantastic time at the Star Trek Fan Days con in Plano, TX. over the weekend. There was a huge turnout of Trek fans in lots of costumes including some of the best Klingons we've seen this side of Star Trek The Experience. The show lasted only two short days and if you watched our live coverage, you know that there were laughs, tears, and some truly great trektastic moments. We'll, maybe there weren't any tears, but it sounded great, didn't it? Anyway, we've finally collected our thoughts and edited our live coverage typos to bring you the post con wrap-up.
