The Captains Screening Feat. William Shatner In NY & LA; With Costume Contests & A Chance To Meet The Man Himself

As all of you probably know by now, William Shatner's The Captains documentary is set to premiere on EPIX July 22nd. In fact, we have a special contest were you can win The Captains schwag and be a part of Trek fandom history. Aside from that, there are two special events set for July 25th & 30th that include The Shat, Trek costuming (or cosplay as the kids call it), and a whole bunch of dead celebrities. Okay, okay, so maybe that last part seems morbid, but it's not, we swear. Oh, and best of all, it's FREE.

On July 25th, EPIX will be holding a special screening of The Captains at the Hollywood Forever Memorial Park in Los Angeles that includes a showing of the doc (of course) with an in person appearance and  introduction by Shatner, himself, plus a Trek costume contest with the lucky winner getting a chance to hang with the original James Tiberius Kirk. So be sure to show up in your best Landru, Mugatu, or even Nomad costume to win the special meet and greet with The Big Man.

Miles McLoughlin Reports: Shore Leave 33

Hello Subspace Communique readers. It’ s hard to believe that my friend and cohost Scott of the Sci Fi Diner Podcast and I were at the Shoreleave convention. For those of you that have never heard of Shoreleave, it’s a fan run convention held near Baltimore MD. Usually sometime in July.

Star Trek's Nichelle Nichols Talks Trek With Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson On StarTalk Radio

Star Trek's Nichelle Nichols Talks Trek With Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson On StarTalk Radio

Back in January at the Women of SciFi convention in Plano, TX., we overheard Nichelle Nichols mention an upcoming interview with famed astrophysicist Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson. It seems that the most recent episode of the Dr's StarTalk Radio show features our favorite chief communications officer. In the first part of a two part series, Nichelle recounts her time on Star Trek and how her role as Uhura impacted her life and society "over space and time." The second half of the interview will air tomorrow (July 17th) at 6pm ET. You can catch the broadcast on the radio (stations listed below) or streaming via the interwebs here, plus a podcast version is available via iTunes here.

SoCal Fans; Special Star Trek Screening This Weekend With Sally Kellerman, Robert Butler, & Marc Zicree - UPDATE - No George Takei

UPDATE - We just got word from Marc Zicree (you can see it in the comments below) that George Takei will not be attending this event.  Also, due to certain restrictions, there won't be a panel. Instead Robert Butler, Sally Kellerman, Christina Moses and Marc will be making some introductory remarks at 2 PM just after the screening of "The Cage" and before "World Enough & Time"

It's not often that a special Trek event comes a long that is epically awesome and free. If you live in Southern California and feel like braving Carmagedon 2011, you'll be in for an extremely special treat. This Saturday (July 16th) at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills George Takei, Sally Kellerman, "The Cage" director Robert Butler and Star Trek writer Marc Zicree will be on hand for a screening of TOS epsiodes "The Cage" & "Where No Man Has Gone Before" plus Star Trek: New Voyages episode "World Enough and Time".

Happy Birthday To Star Trek TNG's Patrick Stewart

Happy Birthday To Star Trek TNG's Patrick Stewart

On this day in 1940, during the second World War in Mirfield, Yorkshire, England, a future award winning actor, starship captain, and Knight of the Realm was born. Happy birthday to Sir Patrick Stewart, he turns 71 today. He's a very busy man, from attending several conventions, to starring in video games and Shakespearean plays, Sir Patrick seems to be consistantly in the news. Heck, he's even receiving an honorary degree.

Aside form his various accolades and accomplishments, Patrick has his own idea of how he'd like to be remembered. When asked in an interview earlier this year, he responded: "For being funny, but I don't think that will happen." Of course to Trek fans, he'll always be the captain of the Enterprise-D, Jean Luc Picard.

CBS Interactive Launches Official Star Trek LCARS iPad App

CBS interactive just launched a brand new app for the iPad that emulates the familiar LCARS. interface form TNG to Voyager. We're huge LCARS fans here at Subspace Communique and if we had an iPad, it would be on there yesterday. The app not only emulates LCARS, but gives the user what looks like an immersive experience with a full Trek database that catalogs aliens, ships, places, and technology from the franchise.  Called the Star Trek PADD, it includes authentic LCARS sounds, plus the computer voice prompts voiced by the first lady of Star Trek, the late Majel Barrett.  All of you iPad fanatics out there can get you're Picard-on and party like it's 2379.  Check the description and link below.

App Description:
The Official Star TrekTM PADD (Personal Access Display Device) immerses fans in a rich interactive database of Star TrekTM information and images with an authentic reproduction of the LCARS style interface introduced in the Star Trek: The Next GenerationTM series.

Trek In The Park Returns To Portland With The Star Trek Classic "Mirror, Mirror"

Star Trek In The Park Returns To Portland With "Mirror, Mirror"

For the last 3 years, Portland area residents have been enjoying live action TOS episodes being performed in an outdoor setting. Trek in the Park returns this year to offer up the classic episode "Mirror, Mirror". As a Trek fan you've got to be familiar with this episode, it's one of our favorites. Kirk, McCoy, Scotty, and Uhura experience problems with the transporter and are sent to an alternate universe. Ya know, the universe were Spock rocks a goatee and awesomeness ensues. If you haven't seen it, turn in your Trek fan card, stop what you're doing and jump on Netflix. We'll give the card back when you finish the episode. Trek in the Park is presented by Atomic Arts and is set to run in Woodland Park from July 9th through the 31st on Saturdays and Sundays at 5pm.

Star Trek's Walter Koenig Talks "Things To Come"

Since Vegas Khhaaan! of last year, we've been waiting to get our hands on Walter Koenig's new projects; the graphic novels / comics "Things to Come" & "Raver". We talked to Walter back in November of last year about both works, on our "Life After Trek" podcast, and he reveled that both will be released this year. They'll be published by the independent comic house Bluewater Productions. Walter was recently interviewed by Ain't it Cool News where he gave more detail about each, as well as a fantastic bit of wisdom for the aspiring creatives out there.

"I think first of all perseverance, faith in yourself. You have to really have a passion and a belief that will stand the test of the myriad rejections that are bound to come unless you are extraordinarily gifted and recognized for it immediately, it’s a hard course to travel, but ultimately it’s a short life and you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do you know and I don’t believe, now more than ever, in a very pivotal and critical time in my life with events having taken a very tragic turn, I believe that you must live it fully and do what is important to you and if possible not to do what’s simply safe and comfortable you know." Walter continues; "If you are creative in any field in any capacity or if you have just a driving ambition in some area, I think you must acknowledge that and respect it."
