The end of May has a lot going on in Texas…two conventions, on back to back weekends. The first one is the Dallas Comic Con on May 21 & 22 and the second is Comicpalooza in Houston on the following weekend, May 27 – 29.

Tonight we’re talking about the Dallas Comic Con and the fact that you MUST NOT MISS SATURDAY, because that’s the day Mr. Spock…Leonard Nimoy, himself, will be there. Along with the amazing Mr. Nimoy the Dallas Comic Con has a great lineup of guests including Carrie Fisher (Star Wars’ Princess Leia), Stan Lee (Comic Book Writer Extraordinaire), and Tom Jane (The Punisher, The Mist). I must admit…you all know that I am a diehard Star Trek fan, but I’m an equally ardent Star Wars fan and I totally can’t wait to meet Carrie Fisher and Richard Leparmentier. The only other thing I’m looking forward to more, is telling Mr. Nimoy (in person, for a second time) that I totally love “In Search Of”.  Honestly, I think I saw every episode (reruns of course) when I was a kid.

Bigger venue, bigger show for Dallas Comic Con

Dallas Comic Con moves to the new 300,000-square-foot Irving Convention Center May 21 and 22 with a super-sized show befitting its new home. Topping the guest list: actors Leonard Nimoy and Carrie Fisher, and legendary artists Stan Lee and John Romita Jr.

The new facility is at least 10 times larger than the show’s previous venues in Plano and Richardson, said Ben Stevens, a partner in C2 Ventures, which also produces Sci-Fi Expo and Fan Days gatherings annually. The shows grew out of toy expos Mr. Stevens produced in local hotels beginning in 1994.

“We’ve come a long way, developing a very large fan base that literally had us bursting at the seams,” Mr. Stevens said. “Some of our recent shows were so crowded, it was difficult to walk the hallways. This larger venue will solve that problem while allowing us to bring in more guests, vendors and special events.”

The fans seem just as excited, he said, noting that VIP and Priority passes to the May show sold out in record time. General admission tickets, which are still available on line or at the door, provide all-day access to the exhibit hall and artist alley; and to the autograph area after VIP and Priority pass holders.

Mr. Nimoy, famous for his role as the emotionless Dr. Spock in the original Star Trek series, will appear Saturday only. All other media guests are scheduled to sign autographs and visit with the fans both days, including Ms. Fisher, best known for her portrayal of Princess Leia in the Star Wars movies.

Laurie Holden, star of AMC-TV’s The Walking Dead, will be accompanied by at least a half dozen of the show’s Zombie Survival Crew. Other actors appearing are John Wesley Shipp (star of The Flash TV series), Tom Jane (Boogie Nights, The Punisher), Richard LeParmentier (“Admiral Motti” in Star Wars: A New Hope), and Amanda Pays (“Tina” in The Flash). Screenwriter and actor Todd Farmer (My Bloody Valentine, Jason X) also is a guest.

Artist Stan “The Man” Lee is a comic book writer; an editor, actor, producer and publisher; and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics. He co-created Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four, X-Men, The Avengers, Iron Man, The Hulk and many others.

Mr. Romita’s first American comic book work was the Amazing Spider-Man Annual #11 in 1977. His other works include Uncanny X-Men, Daredevil, Punisher: War Zone, Thor, Wolverine and The Eternals, and his current project is The Avengers.

They’ll be joined by more than four dozen artists, including Bernie Wrightson, Ethan Van Sciver, Jimmy Palmiotti and Tim Bradstreet. A complete list of artists and their works can be found at www.dallascomiccon.com.

Hours for the two-day show are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 21, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 22. The Irving Convention Center is at 500 W. Las Colinas Blvd., at the intersection of SH114 and Northwest Highway in Irving, Texas.

Daily general admission is $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Admission includes free parking, and children 12 and under are free when accompanied by a paid adult.
