Trek Culture Review: Star Trek Starships Latest Release + Our Model Ship Giveaway
We’ve been subscribers of the Star Trek Starships by Eaglemoss Collections since the last Las Vegas Star Trek Convention in August, 2013. We saw them on the vendor floor and were totally hooked, but it wasn’t until the day after the convention was over (recovery day, as we like to call it) that our good friend Darren (from Trek Cast) reminded us about them and showed us the awesome books and models that he had already received for signing up, that we remembered to sign up for ourselves. Ever since then, we’ve been receiving these little metal beauties in the mail every month like clockwork.
If you haven’t heard about them already, here’s your chance. They are a subscription of Star Trek ship models and accompanying magazines.
The collection features ships from all five STAR TREK television series. Every major Federation vessel will be reproduced from Kirk’s Enterprise to the U.S.S. Defiant and fan favourites such as the Akira class. All the most exciting alien vessels will be featured too, including Klingon, Romulan and Borg ships.
Every possible detail has been scaled down and reproduced to make these models some of the most faithful replicas ever produced. Because of the differences in scale between a massive ship such as the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D and its tiny precursor the Enterprise NX-01, the ships have all been sculpted to sizes between 120mm and 140mm long.
Every model comes with a special collector’s magazine that provides an in-depth profile of the ship, with detailed annotations, and a breakdown of the technology on board, its crew and weapons. Exclusive behind-the-scenes articles reveal how the ship was designed, complete with original design sketches. There is an informative examination of the shooting model (or models) used by the VFX team, and a history of the ship’s on screen appearances.
Our latest models received were the U.S.S Defiant NX-74205 and the Borg Sphere with a special U.S.S Enterprise commemorative plaque. They arrived in very sturdy molded plastic casings and boxes (and bag/styrofoam for the plaque). This snug packaging packaging allowed them to arrive in perfect condition.
These models are very well made and feel very heavy in your hand. All of the detail and paint work is meticulously applied. These definitely stand apart from other models and toys we’ve owned in the past. Also, because each ship has a different shape, they each have custom stands that are clearly marked on the bottoms so you won’t get them mixed up. The labeling comes in handy for those of us who like to remove the stands and pretend to make them fly inspect the ships from all angles.
The commemorative plaque, like the others, is really well made. Its metallic surface has a well done patina that makes it feel like it came right out of a museum. It doesn’t have a stand of its own, or mounting brackets on the back, but we’ve already thought of a few remedies for this which you may find helpful. We originally thought we might like to display it on the shelf next to our ships and realized that a little display stand/easel (that you can pick up from almost any craft store) would easily do the trick. However, our shelf was getting full so we then thought that we’d like to hang it on the wall next to the ships instead. A plate hanger was the gadget to get the job done. If you go that route, just remember to buy the size/weight appropriate hanger, be careful not to scratch the plaque, and know that you may need to bend the gripping hooks a little for a better fit around the plaque’s square edges.
This collector series is pretty darned cool! Be sure to keep a look out for our reviews of each of the ships, going forward in the collection. Check them out HERE for all of the info you need to get a subscription of your very own!
