Trek Fans In Tampa Set To Go For World Record In Their Starfleet Duds
An enterprising group of Trek fans in Tampa, Florida are going for the "most people dressed as characters from the television series and movies" world record. May 1st is the date for the event, which apparently is right in the middle of a small convention being held at the Doubletree Hotel on Cypress Avenue in Tampa.
The three-day convention starts April 30th and ends May 2nd features a small handful of Trek stars including; Gary Graham, Catherine Hicks, Tony Todd, Sally Kellerman, William Morgan Sheppard, Dean Stockwell, and Gary Lockwood.
The current record belongs to a group of fans from London, set on February 14th of this year with only 99 Trek fans. Johnothan Babb, head of the local Star Trek club hosting the attempt, says that he has at least 99 coming for the record attempt, but the other fans in attendance at the con will easily boost that number.
"You don't have to attend the convention itself to become part of the record-setting attempt", Babb said. "The plan is to gather by the hotel pool about 11 a.m. Saturday with a representative from Guinness on hand".
"There is one rule, though. You have to come as an authentic character from any Star Trek television series, movie, comic or book."
"You can't just make one up," Babb said. Although he doesn't expect the title to last long.
"There are a lot of conventions out there that are just huge," he said. "We will be the first U.S. record holder. No matter who breaks the record, we'll have that."
