Tons Of Star Trek Online Updates. Path To 2409, New Ship, Kobayashi Maru, & More
There have been a plethora of updates to the Star Trek Online website this past week. First we start with a brand new update to the 2409 series, 2391. Then we get to see a brand new Kobayashi Maru & meet the team. And if that isn't enough a brand new ship class hits the net for the Star Trek Online Universe. Check out the details below.
Tactical Escort; Commissioned 2394
After the success of the Defiant class in the Dominion War, it was clear that small, heavily-armed starships had a role to play in Starfleet.
Production on these warships diminished in the 2380s in favor of exploration and multi-purpose vessels, and several prototypes were abandoned in the planning stages. In the early 2390s, however, tensions with the Klingon Empire and the Romulans were on the rise and Starfleet Command looked once again for ships capable of holding their own in battle that didn't require the commitment of crew and resources of a larger vessel. The first of the new class of ships was the Vigilant.
With a design inspired by the Defiant class, the Vigilant is designed for one thing: combat. It has limited space for crew and no quarters designed for families or guests, a feature that is standard on Starfleet vessels assigned to long explorations. Also missing are many of the comforts common to Federation vessels, including recreational facilities and lounge areas. A multi-purpose space provides room for both relaxation and physical training. Raids by Nausicaan pirates continue to disrupt shipping lines on the edges of Federation space. Angry at what they perceive as a lack of response by Starfleet and the Federation government, the Federation Transport Union recommends that its members refuse any official cargos without adequate protection.
This causes a crisis for the Federation government. With so many Starfleet vessels assigned to Romulan and Cardassian relief efforts, the government has been relying heavily on civilian ships for routine deliveries to Federation worlds and protectorates. But the union's action threatens everything from shipments of replicators to Alpha Centauri to emergency medical supplies destined for Rutia IV.
Federation President Nan Bacco meets personally with the leaders of the transport union, but the union refuses to budge on what it says is an essential safety issue – too many ships and too many crews have been lost to Nausicaan raids. Presidential aides suggest that Starfleet vessels assigned to exploration and science missions could be rerouted to border defense, but many of those ships are in deep space and it could take them months to return.
Starfleet Command reluctantly agrees to pull back from the Klingon-Romulan border and reassign those ships to patrol the shipping routes. Leaders of some of the Romulan colony worlds howl with indignation that the Federation has broken promises of protection, but those voices are silenced after a sharp rebuke from Admiral Taris. "We are Romulan. We fight our own battles. I would rather see Romulans die with pride in their hearts and swords in their hands instead of mewing for protection like scared younglings."
With the Federation withdrawn from the Romulan border, Chancellor Martok agrees to honor his promise to participate in Federation-mediated peace talks with the Gorn. Representatives from the Klingons, Gorn and Nausicaans converge on Deep Space K-7 for the conference, and the Federation sends some of its most celebrated diplomats to facilitate the talks. You are in command of a Federation starship patrolling the contested three-way border region between the Federation, the Klingon Empire and the Gorn Hegemony.
Your communications officer picks up a distress signal from a nearby Klingon colony world. A sizable Gorn attack force has crossed through the contested region between the two empires and is in the process of laying waste to the system and the battle group which had been stationed there.
Starfleet records confirm the existence of the colony in the system; it is not a fake. From your experience, you know Klingons are, above all, an honorable people; they would not send out such a call unless they truly needed help. Your ship is the only one close enough to intervene in time, but if the Klingons' report of the size of the Gorn attack force is correct, they would overwhelm your ship and continue to lay waste to the colony at their leisure. Other Starfleet ships are also patrolling other sections of the border, but it is highly doubtful that they can join you in time to make any difference. (source Star Trek Online)
